Need a Carrot? Try Some Popcorn.

Well, well, well, Chickens…here we are. Monday, September 18…5th week of the semester…end of summer…Emmys are over…Trump is still in office…Steelers are 2 for 2…hurricane season is in full swing…IOW…life is going on. Are you?

In FYS (First Year Seminar) we’ve talked about motivation recently. Motivation is, I think, the pulse of the psyche…except rather than an autonomous, unconscious process it’s a needy, high-maintenance b—…

Related imageAhem. I mean that it requires our attention. If we don’t work at it, it doesn’t work for us. So many layers right? Like, we have to work at staying motivated enough to do our work?!? (Heavy sigh…I know, right?!? Why can’t anything be easy!!!) And sometimes motivation can become a twisted, like 50 shades of psychoanalysis, relationship. It’s not always easy to figure out what kind of carrot to put on your stick…

So, Chickens, as we work to keep our fingers on the ebb and flow of our impulse-control, I’ll share what I believe to be key to staying motivated:

That’s right. And I’m not alone. According to New York Times essayist Tim Kreider:

“Idleness is not just a vacation, an indulgence or a vice; it is as indispensable to the brain as vitamin D is to the body, and deprived of it we suffer a mental affliction as disfiguring as rickets,…The space and quiet that idleness provides is a necessary condition for standing back from life and seeing it whole, for making unexpected connections and waiting for the wild summer lightning strikes of inspiration—it is, paradoxically, necessary to getting any work done.”

Clearing the “cognitive congestion” and finding room for mental downtime is gaining scientific ground as necessary for maintaining our psychological stores and mental health…those spaces where we house cognitive functions like motivation.

All this to say, we here at Northern are doing all we can to help you maintain balance… this week especially, lots of opportunities for catharsis…a good psychological-emotional-spiritual flossing…

This Thursday (21) @ 6 pm → B&O Auditorium…I mean this movie has got to be a psychological enema…you know…in a totally, like, healthy, cleansing way.

And if your motivation-block needs something a little more…wonder-riff-ic…well we’ve got that too…

family movie night

And then, of course, nothing keeps us motivated like a sense of connection, goodwill, and a good meal…

So give me your hand, er…wing…Chickens…and together we will fly in the face of apathy, indecision, and procrastination! I will bring the popcorn.
